Stronger Together
Contents
Numerous developers seem to overlook the significance of well-crafted cooperative games, neglecting the fact that many gamers share their lives with fellow gamers who are eager to play together. Fortunately, Hazleight is here to fill that gap. They are renowned for their games, including Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons and A Way Out. Additionally, their dynamic director, Josef Fares, is known for his vibrant and candid views on the Oscars, which are not quite appropriate for a family-oriented platform.
It Takes Two is a game designed for two players, requiring a partner to enjoy it, whether you’re playing together on the same screen or online. The online mode is particularly convenient, as only one player needs to purchase the game for both to participate. If you’re looking for an excellent cooperative experience to enjoy with a friend or a partner, It Takes Two is a game you definitely shouldn’t miss. While it may not be a portable game, it’s definitely worth the experience. If you’re curious for more details, keep reading.
An Uncommon Form of Treatment
It Takes Two follows the journey of May and Cody, a couple on the brink of divorce. Their decision has deeply affected their daughter, Rose, who mistakenly believes their conflicts are a result of her actions. After a clumsy announcement of their separation, Rose retreats to the shed and seeks assistance from the Book of Love, authored by Dr. Hakim, hoping to restore her parents’ friendship. Shortly thereafter, May and Cody find themselves transformed into small dolls, crafted by Rose to look like them.
To lift the enchantment, May and Cody are accompanied by the lively and humorous Book of Love, Dr. Hakim, who takes them on an exhilarating journey through their shed, garden, and home, emphasizing the significance of teamwork. Although they initially believe the answer to their troubles is straightforward, they come to realize the necessity of considering the broader perspective to resolve their issues. The narrative is truly enchanting. While players can embody Cody and May, the true highlight is their daughter, Rose. As the game unfolds, players witness her deeply moving efforts to bring joy back to her slumbering parents. However, the game is not solely about emotion; it is also filled with humor. Throughout their adventure, Cody and May frequently comment on the ridiculous scenarios they find themselves in. Dr. Hakim, the Book of Love, is both amusing and charming, poking fun at Cody and May while also providing moments of genuine wisdom.
The Craft of Working Together
The game is an action-packed platformer where players can select to control either May or Cody. It features a vertical split screen, which occasionally merges to highlight specific moments, such as when both characters are driving vehicles simultaneously.
Cody and May embark on an adventure through seven massive segments, each resembling a distinct indie game. These segments are set in various parts of their home. In one, they venture into the shed, where they must confront a menacing, malfunctioning vacuum cleaner that they neglected to fix. In another, they find themselves in the treetops, assisting squirrels in dismantling a nest of wasps that Cody overlooked. Each segment grants Cody and May a special ability; for instance, Cody can throw nails onto specific walls, allowing May to swing from them using her hammer. In the wasp nest, Cody wields an amber gun that fires sticky goo, which can explode when May ignites it with her matchstick gun. Each segment emphasizes the need for teamwork, encouraging both players to collaborate in order to progress.
Nothing ever seems to overstay its welcome. Each part unfolds just long enough before transitioning to something fresh and distinct. I must admit, for a game priced like this, it offers remarkable value. I genuinely never experienced a moment of boredom. In fact, after completing this ten-hour journey, I was eager to dive back in and experience it all over again.
The Small Games
The game does not feature any collectibles. Instead, players can uncover 25 mini-games while navigating through various worlds, where Cody and May engage in friendly competition. These mini-games include activities such as racing, target shooting in a gallery, arcade challenges, chess, bull riding, and dance battles, offering a wide range of fun experiences. You can revisit these mini-games as often as you wish, and some may present different variations upon replaying.
The accomplishments you can earn in this game are quite entertaining to uncover. They are typically obtained by experimenting within the game, driven by the curiosity of “what if we attempted this?” My wife and I found ourselves smiling throughout our time playing it.
Meticulousness
The visuals are bright and lively. Given that the game takes place within a home and its garden, the environment showcases remarkable attention to detail. If you examine the trees, you’ll notice tiny ants marching in a line. The books are labeled with unique titles, adding to the immersion. Numerous NPCs wander through different areas, each contributing to the unique atmosphere and character of their surroundings. There were countless instances where I found myself pausing to appreciate the intricate details. This game may not challenge the graphical limits that many AAA developers are fixated on, but it embraces a straightforward aesthetic, creating a richly detailed and unforgettable experience.
The Echoes of Emotions
The soundtrack is impressive, especially during the game’s more poignant moments. However, I did notice a minor issue. At times, the music seemed a bit off in terms of volume during key moments on screen. It’s a small complaint, but I felt the need to mention something. Additionally, we experienced a minor glitch where the audio was absent in a cutscene, but thankfully, reloading the game resolved the issue.
It Takes Two is not a difficult game. While there are challenges, any mistakes you make result in your characters respawning immediately or at a nearby checkpoint. The gameplay is constantly evolving and leans towards puzzle platforming, making it a game that is meant to be completed.
It Required a Pair
If you have a friend to join you, I highly endorse this game. In fact, I would even suggest investing in a console or PC just to play it. This game advances the gaming industry in a positive way, and it’s unfortunate that others haven’t recognized its significance. It offers a delightful cooperative experience that is sure to provide plenty of enjoyment.
No downloadable content, no microtransactions, no experience points, no glitches, and none of the nonsense that frequently plagues modern games—just a solid video game experience.
It Takes Two stands out as not only one of the finest games I’ve encountered this year but also as one of the most remarkable gaming experiences I’ve ever had, without a doubt.
Final Decision: Highly Recommended
